this is why we recommend that companies operating in the four sectors mentioned above turn to specialist firms in reducing the risk of breakdowns or malfunctions.

How do these service providers operate?

By their very nature, transformers require regular and thorough maintenance, given that a sudden failure can jeopardise industrial production (think of a power substation shutdown) or render charging points, large air-conditioning systems, vessels and the like completely unusable…

The most common causes can include:

leaks

damp

overloads,

technical issues

internal faults.

Insurance companies themselves require their policyholders to draw up a well-structured maintenance plan, which is essential for reducing major claims, extending the lifespan of equipment and improving the energy efficiency of installations.

Generally speaking, these companies offer maintenance, diagnostic, inspection and monitoring services for transformers to ensure reliability and safety, from the initial stages of installation through to reports of faults or malfunctions, right up to full repair.

Manufacturing companies housing electrical switchboards – which are essential for the proper functioning of industrial production – are guaranteed specific predictive repair services, thereby preventing interruptions to the production cycle which could have devastating effects on the entire supply chain.

Some highly specialised services include the design of containment tanks for dielectric oils, site inspections at industrial premises, chemical analyses and dielectric testing to measure the oil’s insulation level, predictive maintenance using ultrasound and thermography, the installation of electrical systems and the maintenance of switchgear.

Why is insurance cover essential in the event of a fault in a transformer?

The subject is highly complex, and this is something that companies which manufacture and sell three-phase transformers to other businesses – which in turn use them to market their finished products – are well aware of.

If I manufacture a three-phase transformer, which we shall call ‘T’ for convenience, I will need to take out insurance against faults in my transformer ‘T’.

But if I am a company that manufactures lifts and uses that transformer T, I will need to insure my end product – which is not T, but which contains T – against product defects.

Both of these companies must take out product liability insurance, but the two policies will be completely different because the interests of these companies differ.

The first policy covers defects arising from a fault in the transformer; the second covers defects arising from a fault in the company’s own lift, which contains that transformer as a component.

Of course, the lift fault may be due to various causes (the transformer T may be working perfectly), but in the event of a claim, both insurance companies may be held liable if the cause is due to a malfunction of T.

How can manufacturers of three-phase transformers protect their businesses from claims arising from defective products?

We would like to emphasise once again how essential it is to engage consultancy firms specialising in reducing the risks of transformer failure or malfunction.

In addition to prevention, we strongly recommend thoroughly reviewing the liability limits under your product liability insurance policy.

Why are very high insurance compensation limits recommended?

To ensure peace of mind – and this is the whole point – I shall try to be as clear as possible.

When we export our transformers abroad, we may know the sectors to which our product is destined, but we certainly cannot know which end-user companies our distributor will sell our transformers to.

Our transformer may be incorporated into machinery, electrical substations, overhead cranes, ferries, vehicles and charging points, large power distribution systems, and this exposes us to risks that must under no circumstances be overlooked.

A sudden fault attributable to our transformer could cause significant damage to the products of our distributor’s client companies, which, in turn, may suffer production downtime and could seek compensation for damages from us.

Every company is different, just as the foreign countries to which our transformers are exported are diverse; these transformers may be used across various industrial sectors by a very significant number of customers, partners, importers and distributors.

What should the insurance limits be?

Between 5 and 10 million euros, valid worldwide.

What manufacturers and exporters of three-phase transformers must verify well to obtain an insurance policy that provides adequate cover against claims?

First and foremost, they must ensure that the insurance company’s claims department communicates fluently in English and that the company has its own insurance partners in the countries where our product is sold.

In this way, should a claim land on the desk of the Italian company’s director, the company can rely on the team of international lawyers that the insurance company itself appoints at its own expense to handle the defence.

Another piece of advice is to ask the insurer to co-insure your importer, thereby extending the cover limits of your policy to include the party responsible for importing and reselling the goods.

Last but not least, relying on insurance advisers with international experience is absolutely crucial: it is thanks to their knowledge of the destination markets and the dynamics and practices involved in settling major claims that we can count on them when a large claim threatens to jeopardise turnover and investments in research, quality, distribution and marketing.

Below, we answer questions from companies wishing to draw up a risk mitigation plan and carefully check the limits and conditions of their insurance policies covering faults in their electrical transformers.
